History of Pallavaram

Pallavaram is known as one of the oldest places where people lived in South India. The present town of Pallavaram started from the ancient settlement of Arshad, which existed during the time of the 8th-century Pallava king Mahendravarman I. The Pallavas left inscriptions in old Pallava script at the cave temple in Pallavaram, which date back to 600 CE. Together with Chromepet, Pallavaram was once called "Pallavapuram."

In the 17th century, the area was briefly under the Portuguese colony of San Thome. Later, both the Mughal Empire and the British East India Company had their cantonments in the city. In the 18th century, the British set up a cantonment in Pallavaram as a support to the one at St. Thomas Mount.

On May 30, 1863, British geologist Robert Bruce Foote discovered a stone tool from the Paleolithic Age in a ballast pit at Pallavaram. Foote confirmed that ancient man lived in these regions. Since then, many Stone Age items have been discovered in the area. Most of these ancient items are now kept in the Egmore Museum.

Pallavaram Friday Market, also known as Pallavaram Sandhai, is a famous market in the city. It is an old market that started in the year 1800. The market is popular for selling food items, plant saplings, animals, and electronic goods.

The market is open only on Fridays and is locally called the Friday Market. It is close to Railway Station, Bus Stand, and Chennai International Airport. Pallavaram Sandhai was first held on Cattle Shandy Road or Sandhai Road. Now known as Acharya Tulsi Road, in Cantonment Pallavaram. Later, the market was shifted to Old Trunk Road near the Railway Station Flyover.

In October 1820, the Board of Revenue in Madras asked the Chengalpet Collector to check if land on the south bank of the Adyar River could be used for army camps. This land covered parts of seven villages in Saidapet Taluk. In 1821, the government decided to buy the land for the Military Department, and payment was made in 1822. The area was then called "The Presidency Cantonment." Over time, this name became less common. In the same year, the ground was levelled, and two nearby villages were added to the cantonment.

By 1832, a Military Bazaar Station was set up, similar to the one at St. Thomas Mount. In 1856, the cantonment boundaries were extended south to include parts of Meenambakkam, Tirusoolam, and Talakanjeri for a rifle range. These changes were announced in the Fort St. George Gazette. On April 1, 1890, taxes were introduced in the cantonment under Section 21, Act III of 1880. In 1904, the area was again expanded, bringing the two cantonments closer. In 1905, the Government of India approved their merger, and the final boundaries of the combined cantonment were officially published in 1911.

A wireless station was built in the early 20th century. The Madras Aerodrome was opened in 1929. Now, in 2025, the region is booming and has become a top IT hub. Many posh residential townships have been built here and have given premium space to live. This place is home to top schools, malls, etc. Its connectivity of all modes has improved, making an easier life for people.
