Pallavaram is not what it used to be. As of June 2025, this South Chennai suburb is changing fast. From new metro lines to school improvements and big real estate launches, there's a lot happening here. The area is part of Tambaram City Municipal Corporation and sits right next to GST Road and Chennai International Airport. That means Pallavaram gets both the advantages—and some of the challenges—of being so well connected.
Metro Work in Full SwingOne of the most exciting updates is the ongoing work on Chennai Metro Phase 2, Corridor 5. This line runs between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur, and parts of it will pass near Pallavaram. Stations like St. Thomas Mount, Kilkattalai, and Medavakkam will serve nearby residents.
The line is about 44.6 km long, and will open in stages between 2025 and 2028. Once it's ready, people living in and around Pallavaram can travel much faster to places like OMR, Guindy, or North Chennai without getting stuck in traffic.
Airport to Kilambakkam Metro – Double-Decker FlyoverAnother big project is the new 15.5 km metro stretch from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus. What's special? It's going to run on top of a flyover. The road will be on the first level, and the metro track will be above it—like two floors stacked up.
The government gave the green signal in April 2025, and the plan is to finish it in about three years. This will make travel along GST Road smoother, especially for those going to the airport or to southern parts of Chennai.
Pallavaram–Kundrathur Road WideningTraffic on this 6.8 km stretch has been a pain for years. But finally, as of May 2025, land is being acquired to make the road four lanes wide.
This work covers areas like Pallavaram, Pammal, Anakaputhur, and Kundrathur B. The road will be 24 meters wide, helping reduce the current travel time, which often takes 30–40 minutes just for a few kilometers.
Better Schools Coming SoonTambaram Corporation is spending over ₹31 crore to improve schools. In Zameen Pallavaram and Ponniamman Nagar, students will soon get new classrooms, smart boards, and cleaner toilets. More than ₹5.7 crore is set aside just for these two areas.
Power Cuts Still CommonPeople in Pammal, Cowl Bazaar, GST Road, and Kadapperi continue to face scheduled power cuts. These are mostly for maintenance and usually happen between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. You can check the latest updates on the TANGEDCO website before planning your day.
Waste Problems Around the CornerGarbage is piling up again in areas like Pozhichalur and Dr. Ambedkar Salai. Locals say plastic and meat waste are often dumped in empty plots. Tambaram Corporation has yet to take strict action, but residents can report problems using the Namma Tambaram app.
Drainage ImprovementsOn the bright side, underground drainage (UGD) work is now complete in some parts, especially along the widened roads. This should help reduce waterlogging and improve hygiene.
Pallavaram is getting a lot of attention from builders and buyers alike. Here's where things stand:
Property Prices in June 2025These apartments suit a wide range of buyers—from airport workers to IT professionals and families looking for peaceful living near city conveniences.
This once-beautiful lake is in poor shape. It's covered in water hyacinth, and untreated sewage is being released into it. Garbage has clogged the canals feeding the lake. The biggest worry? Over 1,300 illegal houses have come up along the lake boundary.
High-rise buildings nearby are digging deep foundations and using groundwater heavily. Some borewells now bring up salty water, which shows the water table is going down.
If nothing changes, Pallavaram could lose one of its last big water sources.
What Can Be Done?Pallavaram is no longer just a small suburb. It's quickly becoming one of South Chennai's most important hubs. With new metro lines, road expansions, and housing options, the area has a lot going for it.
But progress must be responsible. Power cuts, garbage piles, and an endangered lake are reminders that real development means more than just new buildings.
People living here, investing here, or moving here need to stay informed and get involved. That's the only way Pallavaram can truly become the well-rounded, livable place it aims to be.
